QUICK Q & A:

How did you get your idea or concept for your business? I got the idea for Mary Isabel Events after I had begun freelance event planning. I had realized that it would be so much easier for me to market my brand with an official company name. Truthfully, I didn’t expect or plan to start a business but it kind of just happened and I think that it’s wonderful. Some of the best things are unplanned.

How did you pick the name of your business? I decided on using my first(Mary) and middle name (Isabel) for my business. I feel as though many people use their full name or first and last name, so I thought about doing something outside of the box. I also have an uncommon first name and my middle name is also spelled in an uncommon way. I liked doing something a little different.

How have you pivoted given the current circumstances? I launched my business in July 202o, filed for the LLC name in May 2020, so all I have really known with this business is the current circumstances. It has been an adjustment with the conversation I have with brides. The main focus is now about guest counts, venue limitations, and possibilities of having to postpone. I have really pivoted towards helping couples understand contracts with venues and vendors as they have been updated since the pandemic began. Having a “backup” date or plan is also something that I am beginning to discuss with my couples as things continue to look uncertain.

Tell us a little bit about your background in your career prior to starting your business. I started out in the event planning and hospitality industry at 16 years old as a banquet server in my hometown. I always loved the idea of planning events and the tourism industry, which is what pushed me to go to school for it. I attended the University of New Hampshire majoring in Hospitality for two years before changing over to Program and Event Management. I gained experience working at the Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, New Hampshire, the Rockingham Country Club in New Market, NH, and Rafanelli Events, in Boston, MA. Most recently I worked in events at the Salem Waterfront Hotel & Suites in Salem, MA before moving back to my home state of Connecticut.

What motivates you? Doing what I love and having a passion for events is what motivates me. I’m extremely lucky that I found something I love doing every single day. Helping to plan and create someone’s wedding is extremely rewarding and I love being a part of their special day.
